Center for Active Nonviolence & Peacemaking

The Center for Active Nonviolence and Peacemaking was created as means for integrating Franciscan spirituality with the mission of promoting active nonviolence and peacemaking, as well as advocating for social justice issues and care for the earth.  Most recently, the Center has focused on nuclear disarmament, immigration reform, the death penalty, poverty, environmental concerns, and active nonviolence.

Through special events, our weekly Action Alert Digest and website, the Center reaches out to involve the community at large.

You can read more about these specific issues in the Advocacy section of our website.

For more information on how the public can get involved in these important issues, visit our Advocacy Groups page.

Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord,

Make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith.
Where there is despair, let me bring hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I
may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
-Attributed to St. Francis of Assisi

Jan Cebula OSF, first Coordinator of the Clinton Franciscan Center for Active Nonviolence

In 1989 Jan, a member of the Kansas City Catholic Worker community, reported to the congregation on a Faith and Resistance retreat she attended and awakened in her sisters the call to active nonviolence. As vice president from 1992 to 2000, she led the congregation in establishing a policy on civil disobedience and taking corporate stands on justice issues.
